Bigger Than Sound tells the story of Phoenix-based concert promotion company Stateside Presents and its founder, Charlie Levy. The film follows Charlie from his days booking shows at Arizona State University and venue Nita’s Hideaway to the opening of his very own venue—the Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix. Featuring interviews with Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World, Sam Means of The Format and merch company Hello Merch, Nate Ruess of The Format and Fun., Miniature Tigers, and Jeremiah Gratza of Stateside Presents, Bigger Than Sound paints a picture not just of Charlie’s work and ambition, but also of the evolution of Phoenix’s live music scene from the late ’90s to today.

“The Izu Islands are a group of volcanic islands stretching south and east from the Izu Peninsula of Honshū, Japan. Miyakejima island rests atop an active volcanic chain that has erupted six times in the last century. However, the danger isn’t just from volcanic eruptions, but from the highest concentrations of poisonous gasses (primarily sulfur) in the world regularly leaking up through the ground. Residents were evacuated from the islands in 2000 due to volcanic activity and dangerously high levels of gas. The people returned in 2005 but are now required to carry gas masks with them at all times in case gas levels rise unexpectedly.” SO WEIRD.

It’s had more name changes than O.D.B., but they appear to be settling on the title “Vamp U.” The filmmakers need a little help putting the nail in the coffin (ba dum pssh) so they set up a Kick Starter campaign.. Check it out and maybe donate a few bucks for some cool stuff in return, including a digital copy of the soundtrack. The movie is really funny and has the boss from Office Space in it, so you can’t really go wrong.. Yeahhhh.
